ÉTYM. 1933; empr. à l'angl. (1917), abrév. probable de marlinspike « épissoir », mot de marine, de marlin, marline, qui correspond au franç. merlin, et spike « objet pointu », à cause du bec que forme la mâchoire supérieure du poisson.
